Danger shouldn't be this sexy...

Cougar shifter Abby Carter always plays it safe. That's why she's an accountant—no excitement, no danger, and no cocky alpha males. She loves her quiet life, but fate has other plans. When Abby uncovers the shady dealings of an anti-shifter organization, she'll have to trust the too-sexy-for-her-peace-of-mind werewolf Declan Reed... or end up six feet under.

Declan Reed is starting over. After two years with Shifter Operations Command, it's time to put his past behind him. Now Declan is the only thing standing between the gorgeous Abby and an early grave, and if he's going to have any chance of keeping her alive, he'll have to embrace the darkness he's fought to keep at bay. But first he has to convince Abby that there's no safer place in the world than the arms of a big bad werewolf.

 Excerpt

There was nothing sexier than a man—half-naked and sexy as hell—in the kitchen.  Declan opened an upper cabinet and grabbed a pan, stretching to reach handle.  The move made his jeans drop just a hint, exposing more of those muscles she wanted to lick and nibble.
Her center clenched, clit throbbing with a surge of desire, and she bit her lip to keep her whimper in check.  Then… then he made it so much worse—better? He set the pan on the stove and went to the fridge, tugging on the door so it swung open.  It gave her a clear view of his back, of the play of muscles while he moved, the way they slid beneath his skin.  That was when he made it all worse.  He leaned down to peer into the space, attention firmly on the fridge’s interior.
Meanwhile her attention was firmly on his ass.  She wanted to bite and nibble him there, too. Okay, she wanted him everywhere, all of him.  Oh, she wouldn’t destroy herself in that way—Declan was dangerous, heartless—but that didn’t mean she couldn’t ogle. A lot.
“You done staring, yet?” Laughter tinged his words and she wrenched her attention from his ass. He remained bent over and peeked at her from beneath his arm. She met his teasing gaze for a split-second, his twitching lips enough to make her face flush, and then shot her stare to the ground. “Or should I go ahead and strip for you?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she mumbled.
“Liar.” His chuckle turned deep and dark, like smooth chocolate that lured her forward a step before she realized she’d moved. He straightened and turned away from the fridge, nudging the door closed with his foot.
His bare foot.
Could feet be sexy?
Abby’s cougar purred.  Apparently.
“Come eat.” He placed a carton of eggs and bag of shredded cheese on the counter.
“You keep trying to feed me.” She steeled herself for being so close to Declan without touching him.
“Because you need to eat.”  He didn’t give her a spare glance, just cracked an egg on the edge of the pan, a nice sizzle following the move. He tossed the empty shell in the sink and then focused on her, blue eyes intent. “You need to be prepared for what’s coming.”
“Coming?” Her heartbeat stuttered, her banked fear resurged and threatened to take over.
Declan’s eyes bled amber for a moment, flickered between man and wolf, and he refocused on the stove. “A team is hunting you on behalf of the director.”
“I don’t know what that means.” Or rather, she didn’t want to know.
He was quiet then, attention wholly on the frying pan as if his cooking decided the fate of the world. The longer he ignored her, the more nervous she became until she simply couldn’t take it anymore.
“Declan?” He didn’t make a sound, just flipped the second egg onto the plate and slid it across the counter
“Sweetheart,” he murmured, blue eyes back and staring deep into her soul. “Until we know more, you’re with me. Once we’re holding all the cards, we’ll figure out our play. For now, it’s just us.”

3.5  STARS

Tasty shifters are all on the menu, but one morsel stands out in Wolf's Mate! Declan is one sexy beast and he has his eye on Abby! Intense action from start to finish! Wolf's Mate is an interesting look into another shifter world where human fanatics want to obliterate all shifters. A great start to a new series with plenty of steamy moments. Declan and Abby have quite the chemistry, adding just the right amount of romance. I look forward to reading more from Celia Kyle.

Early Review: The Lost Vampire by Kate Baxter

Soul mate--or tragic fate?

Once one of the oldest dhampirs in existence, Saeed now faces a treacherously uncertain future as a vampire. He believes that the only thing that can restore his position within his coven and tether his lost soul is the flame-haired fae who is destined to be his mate.

Cerys Bain is a soul thief. She is feared by those who dwell in the supernatural realm--and hopelessly bound to the ruthless mage Rinieri de Rege. The raw, sensual vampire who enters her world is both a threat and an intoxicating temptation: No one has ever made Cerys feel the way Saeed does. But to claim their fate as soulmates, Saeed must first find a way to free Cerys from Rin. Is their desire worth the risk of certain destruction--and eternal doom?

4 STARS

The Lost Vampire is an action packed paranormal. If you read the last book in the series you will remember that Saeed was not doing well.  The endless search for his mate had taken its toll. We now find Saeed making plans for his future and Cerys is the most vital element in making them a reality.  He must find his mate regardless of the dangers and they must overcome the damage time apart and an evil mage has conceived. Cerys is lost and questions the relationship with Saeed.  Her secret could destroy everything he has been working towards and leave them exactly where they started. Baxter delivers female heroines that are bold, who have a knack for taking care of themselves, and Cerys is no exception. Saeed is a keeper!  There is something sexy and desirable about a man who knows what he wants and knows how to get it. I can't wait for the next story in the series.

Early Review: Under Fire (Love Over Duty #1) by Scarlett Cole

Jul 25, 2017

RITA nominee Scarlett Cole’s Under Fire pairs a hot Navy SEAL with a medical researcher who finds herself in too deep.

Hot, hard-bodied Sixten Rapp is a former SEAL who’s raring to begin his brand-new civilian life. He and his Navy “brothers” start a security firm that offers the kind of services only a team of military-trained professionals can provide. But nothing prepared Six for his new client: an innocent woman on a mission to improve thousands of lives. . . unless someone takes hers first.

Dr. Louisa North knows time is against her as she tries to create a “miracle” medical treatment for a disease with no known cure, until she creates a sample so powerful that the wrong people want to use it as a chemical weapon. At first, Six is unwilling to accept Louisa as his client. But soon he realizes that the danger is real and that there’s much more to this plain-Jane scientist…including a burning passion between them that neither of them can resist. And now that an enemy is on Louisa’s trail, Six will do whatever it takes to protect her—or die trying.

4 STARS

Under Fire is the first book in Scarlett Cole’s new Love Over Duty Series and it’s a winner! It’s also my first read by this author and she’s got a new fan!

Dr. Louisa North has been working on trying to develop a treatment for a deadly genetic disease that took her father from her 10 years prior. When she has to speak at a fundraiser for this disease, she ends up meeting Six Rapp, a formal Navy SEAL who has started up a security firm with his SEAL “brothers” and is doing security detail for the event. After the fundraiser, Louisa can’t stop thinking about Six, which is very unusual for her. Her life is all about being at the lab or at home. But there’s just something about him…

When Louisa suspects someone has been going through her notes and samples at the lab, she makes a switch on the labels of two of the samples, due to one turning out to be a very dangerous one and she doesn’t want it getting in the wrong hands. But when the sample believed to be the bad one goes missing, Louisa is on a mission to find out what happened and why.

When she turns to Six and his company for help with finding out what happened in the lab, at first one of his “brothers” isn’t on board since this isn’t the kind of work they do, but Six wants to help her. When things take a turn for the worse and men are after Louisa, all of Six’s team are on board. Things really heat up between the two of them and even though Six tries to cool things down while on the case, he can’t fight his feelings for Louisa and she doesn’t want him to.

Will they stop the men going after Louisa in time, before someone gets hurt or worse? Will Six be able to keep Louisa safe?

With great action and suspense, a hot romance, and a storyline that had me into it from the very beginning, this was a very enjoyable read. I’m very much looking forward to continuing this series and reading more of Scarlett Cole’s books!

 Excerpt

“You’re staying,” Maggie whispered.
“I am.”
“You’ll be happy here, Brawley.”
“I’ll miss you.”
“You’ve lived without me for a long time.”
“But I always knew you’d be here. That I could get my Maggie fix whenever I needed it with a couple hours’ drive.”
“Brawley—”
“I know.” He held up a hand. “Not fair. I won’t ask you to stay. I know better than that. This is something you have to do.”
“It is.”
“Once you’re in New York, though, if you don’t like it, I’ll be here.”
 “That’s not going to happen.”
“Red, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s never say never.”
“Fine.” Her heart hammered in her chest. She moved to the leather love seat, her hand stroking it. “This is yummy.”
“So are you.” The thought tumbled out before he could stop it.
She turned, so close he could feel her breath on his face.
He hadn’t meant for it to happen. He hadn’t brought her here to make a move. But damn if he could keep his hands, his mouth, off her.
He’d watched her all day, that gorgeous red hair done up in a tumbled mass, curls escaping and trailing down her neck. He’d itched to pull out whatever pins held it and spill the fiery strands around her. Wanted to run his hands through it, feel the silky softness.
More, he wanted to unzip that swath of silk and let it slide to the floor. Wanted to touch the creamy white skin beneath. Needed to taste her. Her lips, the back of her knees, her stomach.
Needed to know if she still wore the little silver ring through her belly button.
Needed almost more than his next breath to hear her quiet little sighs, her cries of delight as they made love.
His gaze drifted to her red, red lips when her tongue peeked out between them.
“Maggie—”
“Brawley?”
“Yeah?” He raised his eyes back to hers. They always reminded him of a Texas meadow right after a spring rainstorm. What man could resist? Sure as hell not him. He caved. Pulled her to him. Felt her heat.
The first kiss was tentative. After that initial foray, though, he lost sight of his good intentions, of right and wrong.
Soft. So very soft.
His hand moved to the back of her neck, drawing her closer still. Inching into that silken mass of hair, he removed the pins one at a time, sighed when the strands spilled loose over his fingers, his hand, his arm.
His mouth left hers, traced a path along her chin, over her cheek. He buried his face in her hair and breathed deeply. God, she smelled good.
Maggie gave him those little sighs, those moans he’d been craving.
His lips trailed back to hers. When they parted, he slid his tongue inside to dance with hers. He backed her up till she was against the sofa.
Sliding a hand beneath her knees, he scooped her up and laid her on the soft leather, then followed her down. His hands ran the length of her, his fingers trailing beneath the hem of her dress.
He felt her cool hands on his heated flesh. Somehow she had his shirt out of his pants and half unbuttoned. Her head lowered, and she trailed a line of kisses across his bare chest. She stopped at the small scar just above his navel, flicked her tongue over it.
Brawley sucked in his breath. Maggie had been the one to mark him there with a stick when they’d been eight-year old pirates fighting it out with pretend swords. He put a finger beneath her chin and raised her head to taste her lips again.
She had matured, ripened. Was everything the eighteen-year- old Maggie had been and more. Much more.
“Oh, Mags,” he whispered into her ear. “You’re killing me.”
She answered with a long, deep kiss.
He groaned. “I want you so badly it hurts.”
“Shut up and kiss me, cowboy.”
