Early Review: The Graveyard Shift by Darynda Jones

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Darynda Jones
comes a new story in her Charley Davidson series…

Guarding a precocious five-year-old who is half-human, half-god, and 100% destined to save the world is no easy feat.

Garrett Swopes was the ultimate skeptic until he met a certain hellion and her husband. They vanished after stopping a catastrophic event and left him, a mere mortal, in charge of protecting their gift to mankind. But when she disappears as well, he needs the help of another breed of hellion. One who can see past the veil of space and time. One who betrayed him.

She will get a truce in the deal, but she will never earn his forgiveness.

Marika Dubois’s son—a warrior in the coming war between heaven and hell—was foreseen long before his birth. But to create a child strong enough to endure the trials that lay ahead, she needed a descendant of powerful magics. She found that in Garrett Swopes and tricked him into fathering her son. A ploy he has never forgiven her for. But when he knocks on her door asking for her help, she sees the fierce attraction he tries to deny rise within him.

And Marika has to decide if she dares risk her heart a second time to help the only man she’s ever loved.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

5 STARS

Marvelous! The sexy Garrett Swopes is back in The Graveyard Shift! Garrett was that one character from the Charley Davidson series who needed his story told. Beep is a bit older and she's all kinds of amazing, showing signs of what she will become. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, Beep is most certainly her mother and father's daughter. Garrett continues to stand guard over Beep as he promised at the end of the Charley series. When things go wrong, he turns to the only person who can help him. Marika, aka baby mama, is not to be trifled with. She will do whatever is necessary to protect the father of her child, and that means facing an unknown enemy. Together Garrett and Marika search for Beep, and their relationship evolves. Garrett will realize his feelings for Marika unlock his true powers. He will finally be able to see what was obscured. This super novella is riddled with surprise guest appearances from our favorite Charley Davidson gang. This novella is a must-read!

Cover LOVE: The Fiery Crown (Forgotten Empires Book 2) by Jeffe Kennedy

Posted on May 11, 2020 with No comments

May 11, 2020

The colors on this cover speak to me.  The reds and gold are vibrant and beckoning.  The covers for most of Kennedy's books call to a reader.  They tell their own story.

A queen and her rebel prince turn from enemies to lovers while evil forces plot to destroy them in this lush romantic fantasy.

Following The Orchid Throne, Conri and Lia’s marriage of convenience has turned into an uneasy alliance. If only the two leaders could agree on something. Driven by revenge, Conri wants to attack Emperor Anure before the tyrant gets to them first. But Lia needs to keep Calanthe safe, and refuses to sacrifice her kingdom. Their ongoing battle for control has built up tension they’re both more than happy to release in bed, the only place where they find common ground. But Conri and Lia are developing deeper feelings for each other that are complicating matters. In the second book in the Forgotten Empires trilogy, Conri and Lia find their loyalties torn, and with Emperor Anure’s threat growing, will they be able to risk everything with each other before it’s too late?

Available May 26th!

My all time favorite cover from Jeffe Kennedy has to be The Arrows of the Heart cover!  Just adore the colors and it has dragons!!

A STRANGER’S FAITH

As the Twelve Kingdoms and their allies are drawn toward war, a princess cast aside must discover a purpose she never dreamed of…

Karyn af Hardie behaved like a proper Dasnarian wife. She acquiesced, she accepted, she submitted. Until her husband gave her a choice: their loveless, unconsummated royal marriage—or her freedom. Karyn chose freedom. But with nowhere to run except into the arms of Dasnaria’s enemies, she wonders if she’s made a mistake. She wants love, security, a family. She can’t imagine finding any of it among the mercurial Tala.

Worst of all is Zyr. The uninhibited shapeshifter is everywhere she looks. He’s magnetic, relentless, teasing and tempting as if she’s free to take her pleasure where she wishes. As if there isn’t a war rising before them, against a vile and demanding force far stronger than they. But with Karyn’s loyalty far from certain, Zyr offers her only chance to aid the defense—a dangerous gambit to seek out a land not seen in centuries, using clues no one can decipher. Together, they’ll have every opportunity to fail—and one chance to steal something truly precious…

Review: Ninth House (Alex Stern Book 1) by Leigh Bardugo

Posted on May 10, 2020 with No comments

May 10, 2020

Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. By age twenty, in fact, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicides. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of the world’s most elite universities on a full ride. What’s the catch, and why her?

Still searching for answers to this herself, Alex arrives in New Haven tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies. These eight windowless “tombs” are well-known to be haunts of the future rich and powerful, from high-ranking politicos to Wall Street and Hollywood’s biggest players. But their occult activities are revealed to be more sinister and more extraordinary than any paranoid imagination might conceive.

Ninth House was an interesting read. Galaxy Stern was a provocative character. She felt muted at times and then would jump up at you throughout the story. I love how Bardugo brought to life the powerful alumni and various conspiracy theories at Yale. This discreet and hidden world of societies can wield magic and hold power in the city of New Haven. Alex's search for answers from the present and the past reveal her true nature. I found myself wanting to see more of Alex and Darlington together as a team. I yearned for more romance between the two.  I imagine we will learn more in the next book in the series. There is plenty of magic and unknowns in this story to keep a reader engaged. Leigh Bardugo writes beautifully, but at times I found myself a bit mystified by the direction of the story. I look forward to more in the Alex Stern series. Is is my first foray into a Leigh Bardugo world, I plan on reading more of her work.

Review: How To Love A Duke in Ten Days (Devil You Know Book 1) by Kerrigan Byrne

May 7, 2020

These men are dark, bold, and brave. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees...

Famed and brilliant, Lady Alexandra Lane has always known how to look out for herself. But nobody would ever expect that she has darkness in her past—one that she pays a blackmailer to keep buried. Now, with her family nearing bankruptcy, Alexandra strikes upon a solution: Get married to one of the empire’s most wealthy eligible bachelors. Even if he does have the reputation of a devil.

LOVE TAKES NO PRISONERS

Piers Gedrick Atherton, the Duke of Redmayne, is seeking revenge and the first step is securing a bride. Winning a lady’s hand is not so easy, however, for a man known as the Terror of Torcliff. Then, Alexandra enters his life like a bolt of lightning. When she proposes marriage, Piers knows that, like him, trouble haunts her footsteps. But her gentleness, sharp wit, independent nature, and incredible beauty awakens every fierce desire within him. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe in his arms.

5 STARS

Nurturing haven of passion! How To Love a Duke in Ten Days stole my heart. Piers was an epitome of all the virtues lovers of historical romance seek. His strong but gentle demeanor was reflected throughout the story. Byrne delivers an angsty, moving journey of pain and salvation in the arms of two strong characters. Alexandra and her Red Rogue sisters are charismatic from the very beginning.
The well-developed characters are a tantalizing mix of their pasts, presents, and futures, transporting readers into a historical romance with all the right elements to please. I loved the fast pace of the storytelling. Byrne gets right the heart of the matter without leaving out any of the important details. Although Piers and Alexandra's past have molded them, together they find the strength to overcome their demons and begin a new chapter in their lives. How To Love a Duke in Ten Days will pull at your heartstrings, and for many, connect on a deeper level. Byrne brought to life a very real and sadly all too common occurrence in the lives of women. I'm delighted I chose to read the first book in the series before reading All Scot and Bothered, book two in The Devil You Know series. If you love a great historical romance with bold and at times comical characters, whose stories move you, then How to Love A Duke in Ten Days is for you.

Bridgerton Series Coming to Netflix!

May 2, 2020

Julia Quinn's Bridgerton Series will be on Netflix!!
Now is the perfect time to read before the series comes to life.

Can there be any greater challenge to London’s Ambitious Mamas than an unmarried duke?—Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1813

By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend’s sister, the lovely—and almost-on-the-shelf—Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth—it’s all an elaborate plan to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable.
But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it’s hard to remember that their courtship is a complete sham. Maybe it’s his devilish smile, certainly it’s the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her… but somehow Daphne is falling for the dashing duke… for real! And now she must do the impossible and convince the handsome rogue that their clever little scheme deserves a slight alteration and that nothing makes quite as much sense as falling in love…
