Review: City of Light by Keri Arthur

The first in an all-new futuristic fantasy series from Keri Arthur—the New York Times bestselling author of the Souls of Fire novels.

When the bombs that stopped the species war tore holes in the veil between this world and the next, they allowed entry to the Others—demons, wraiths, and death spirits who turned the shadows into their hunting grounds. Now, a hundred years later, humans and shifters alike live in artificially lit cities designed to keep the darkness at bay....

As a déchet—a breed of humanoid super-soldiers almost eradicated by the war—Tiger has spent her life in hiding. But when she risks her life to save a little girl on the outskirts of Central City, she discovers that the child is one of many abducted in broad daylight by a wraith-like being—an impossibility with dangerous implications for everyone on earth.

Because if the light is no longer enough to protect them, nowhere is safe...

Explosive opening novel!  Keri Arthur holds readers spellbound in this exciting new book.  In your face, prominent and multifaceted characters will tantalize the senses.  Keri's world building abilities and cohesive alien culture are an art form.  Keri's paranormal components infused with elements of physics and magic are a provoking. Readers will fall in love with divine Tiger and her abilities.  I found myself enveloped in the attraction between Tiger and Jonas, devouring each scene.  I can't wait to read the second book in the Outcast series, Winter Halo.

An Energy Vampire Novel

A hidden society of vampires—and the humans they love—are at the heart of this opening novel in a biting, all-original series from the New York Timesbestselling author of the Nightwalkers saga.

Rafe DaSilva is an energy vampire, soaking up nourishment from the sun—and, only when necessary, drawing sweet sustenance from humans who are pure in body and spirit. As the right-hand man to his queen, Rafe is a key player at a historic peace summit in New York City, which will unite the vampire nations against a common threat: the sycophants, who feed on humanity and kill indiscriminately. But Rafe’s fascination with a beautiful blond police detective may put everything at risk.

Detective Renee Holden has never worked a homicide quite like this. The victim has twin puncture wounds on his neck, and the only eyewitness swears she saw a vampire. Now’s definitely not the time to get distracted by a seductive stranger. But the suave, darkly austere, exotically handsome Rafe DaSilva is a hard man to deny, and as Renee falls under his spell, she also falls prey to his enemies. Desperate to protect her, Rafe lifts the veil on a shadow realm she can only visit—a world of intoxicating power, terrifying dangers, and forbidden pleasures.

Thirst by Jacquelyn Frank is a wonderful opening novel to a new vampire series. Frank delivers an intriguing view of vampires.  Sexy and strong characters bring this story to life as a killer is found and brought to justice.
Renee is a tough as nails city cop whose chemistry with Rafe takes the story to a new level.   I can't wait to see what happens next in the series.  If you love vampires then you are sure to enjoy Thirst.

A STRANGER'S SMILE

Christmas may be coming to Linavar, but Temperance Menzie is far from joyful. Grief-stricken over the death of her father at the hands of the Black Riders, she almost didn't see the wounded stranger in the woods. And now she's determined to give this braw, brooding Highlander the help she couldn't give her father. But there's a secret lurking in the depths of his blue-gray eyes. And Temperance won't rest until she uncovers it . . .

A LOVER'S KISS

A killer for hire. It's the last thing Cailean Grant ever thought he'd become, but being part of the Black Riders was his only way to survive. Now, his guilt grows day by day, along with his desire for the beautiful, brave lass nursing him back to health. As Christmas, the season of miracles, draws near and the truth of his identity threatens to come out, Cailean must risk the only thing he has left to lose-his heart.

Rich in historical detail and complex characters, A Highlander's Christmas Kiss is sure to please.  Strong and flawed characters bring an authentic and rich feel to the story.  Paula Quinn works her magic as her characters and story evolve and develop with each turn of the page. Quinn's stories will always transport you into a past weaved with romance and intrigue.  I can't wait to learn more about Patrick MacGregor in the next story of the series.

Travelers is super interesting although a bit predictable.  Time travel and the rules that apply are always an issue to say the least. Travelers is well written and has many great moments in season one.  The characters worked well together and brought the story to the forefront. It will be interesting to see how season two evolves. If you love time travel and feel you are somewhat of an authority on the subject, this series is sure to leave you with quite a bit to say.
