It is the child of Arlene's late fiancé, the psychopathic serial murderer (is that redundant?) Rene Lenier. Sookie killed Rene in self-defense by in season one. The time line was confusing since in real time Rene had been dead long past the human gestational period but in series time the space between season one and season three was quite short. Since Sookie was away for a year, though, so Mikey is born and starting to become a toddler at about a probable six-months.

Arlene thinks Mikey is evil. And, well, things happen around little Mikey that aren't really normal for a toddler: Grafitti, popped blood vessels, decapitated Barbies, Arlene and Terry's rent house burning down, etc.

But is it that the Baby is an evil spawn of Rene, or is something else going on? After all, Arlene has "seen" Rene's spirit and he has spoken to her. Well, as we've learned, LaFayette is a Medium and sees sprits. He's been seeing a young, beautiful Creole woman around Mikey, who can also see her.

If you recall, Jessica and Hoyt are living together in a house he rented for them at the end of S3. They don't now it but the house is the scene of a double murder.

When they first got it there was a creepy antique doll in the house. It was obvious that it would be part of the next season as it was prominently displayed.

In the 1930s the house was the home of a young Creole, Mavis who had an affair with a married white man. He killed the baby and when Mavis founds out he killed her as well.

Somehow, she believes Mikey is this child. She possesses Lafayette and gets to her old house and the scene of the crime. I had thought the relationship problems Jess and Hoyt had were related to that creepy doll. Jessica gave the creepy doll to Arlene which is something of a strange gift. I think the spirit of Mavis resided in the doll. Once LaFayette is possessed by Mavis, and barricades him/herself in Hoyt's house, Jesus is able to talk LaFayette/Mavis down and as a brujo reunite the baby and the mother and send them to a peaceful rest.

Don't forget, LaFayette is still a medium, the dead do not rest easy, and Bon Temps has plenty of them to go around!
